Six people including a five-year-old boy sustained minor injuries after a grenade was thrown into a beauty salon in Grenoble, France, in an attack prosecutors believe was designed to intimidate rather than kill.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the incident, showing one man throwing the explosive device whilst another individual filmed the scene. The deliberate recording of the attack has raised questions about whether the perpetrators intended to broadcast their actions as a warning.
Prosecutor Etienne Manteux stated the grenade was “not intended to kill” but served as an intimidation tactic. All six victims suffered slight injuries in the blast, with the five-year-old child among those requiring medical attention. French television station BfmTv reported the incident.
The attack represents the second grenade bombing in Grenoble within approximately one year. On 12 February last year, a similar assault targeted a bar located in what authorities described as a sensitive neighbourhood, leaving 15 people injured with six sustaining serious wounds.
The repeat nature of grenade attacks in the city has prompted concerns about escalating violence and the use of military-grade explosives in civilian areas. The previous incident at the bar resulted in significantly more casualties, with nearly half of the victims suffering serious injuries requiring extended medical treatment.
