President Trump has announced a week-long ceasefire for Ukrainian cities after securing an agreement from Vladimir Putin to suspend bombardment of urban areas.
The US President revealed the arrangement during a cabinet meeting, stating he had asked the Russian leader “not to fire into Kyiv and various towns for a week, and he agreed to do that”.
Trump praised Putin for making what he described as a “very nice” decision to halt the strikes. The ceasefire specifically covers attacks on Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, along with various other towns across the country.
The announcement comes as millions of Ukrainians remain without electricity or power following sustained Russian bombing campaigns targeting the nation’s energy infrastructure. Trump referenced the severe conditions facing civilians, telling his cabinet: “They’ve never experienced cold like that.”
The agreement represents a partial ceasefire focused on preventing strikes against civilian population centres during the seven-day period. However, Trump’s announcement did not clarify whether the pause extends to all military operations or remains limited to attacks on cities and towns.
Russia has not yet officially confirmed its intention to implement the ceasefire Trump described. Moscow has not released statements through diplomatic or military channels acknowledging the arrangement between Putin and the US President.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Wednesday that another wave of Russian attacks was anticipated, suggesting Ukrainian authorities remain prepared for continued strikes despite Trump’s announcement.
