EasyJet is creating 130 jobs in the North East after announcing Newcastle as its newest UK base, with the first flights to Rome and Lisbon launching within months.
The budget carrier confirmed the expansion will support around 1,200 jobs across the UK in total, while bringing two sought-after European destinations to the region for the first time in easyJet’s network.
Lisbon is an entirely new route from Newcastle Airport, with officials confirming strong customer demand had driven the decision. Rome Fiumicino will provide a second Italian connection from the North East.
Both services go on sale today, with one-way fares starting at £33.99 to Rome and £43.99 to Lisbon.
The Rome route launches on March 30, 2026 — timed for the Easter holidays — while Lisbon begins on June 22. Both will operate twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays.
Manchester passengers are also gaining a new connection to Bari in southern Italy from July 3, 2026, with fares from £38.99.
Package holidays through easyJet Holidays are available across all three destinations, with a three-night Lisbon break starting at £199 per person. Bari beach packages include flights, accommodation, 23kg luggage and transfers.
Leon McQuaid, director of aviation development at Newcastle Airport, said the investment would bring significant economic benefits to the region while attracting more visitors.
The airline will operate 22 routes from Newcastle once the new base opens in approximately two months.
EasyJet said it would offer more than 50 million seats to and from the UK this summer — its largest ever flying programme — as it marks its 30th year.
